History you can visit

Crane & Galena, rails to the river.

Two Stone County towns, one easygoing history outing: begin at the museum in Crane, then continue to Galena and the James River.

The town’s history

Two towns with different stories

Crane grew from a settlement called Hickory Grove into a railroad town. Missouri Pacific arrived in December 1904, and the new streets followed the tracks. Start with that story in Crane, then continue to Galena for a different chapter of Stone County life. [1]

The town that spent Carney dollars

According to the Stone County Museum’s account, B. F. Carney began circulating personal notes as money in 1933 to stimulate business during the Great Depression. The Carney dollar gives this railroad town an unusual financial footnote. [1]

Galena’s quieter river vacations

In the early 1920s, Camp Yocum near Galena offered screened bungalows, fishing and swimming on the James River, with transport from the railroad depot. Later called Camp Blackstone, it is a glimpse of early resort life; the former camp is not an advertised stop on this outing. [2]

Build a short outing

Start in Crane, finish by the James

  1. Begin at the museum. Plan your arrival around confirmed museum hours. Ask which local photographs or railroad records are available to see.
  2. Take a short look around Main Street. Connect the town’s street layout with its railway story before leaving Crane.
  3. Drive to Galena. Allow roughly 15 minutes for the approximately 10-mile trip along MO-265/MO-413, plus time for parking.
  4. Finish at the Y-Bridge area. Use the city’s current access guidance for your river stop. Recall the early fishing-camp story without seeking out unverified former camp sites.

The distance is a town-to-town estimate, not live routing. Check the museum schedule first and allow extra time for each stop.
